Turning right from Castle Street onto The Borough

There has been a lot of feedback through the consultation on the practicality of the right turn from Castle Street into the Borough shown in Option B. The modelling results we have published as part of the consultation predict that flows on both Castle Street and The Borough are expected to reduce.

This means that there will be less traffic having to give way at the bottom of Castle Street and also that it will be giving way to less traffic travelling eastbound on The Borough.

The operation of the proposed traffic lights at the junction at the top of Downing Street and the pedestrian crossing will create natural breaks or gaps in the flow of traffic which will help traffic emerge from Castle Street. There has also been concern regarding the proximity of the proposed bus stop to Castle Street junction.

Once the consultation is complete and the preferred option for the town centre is chosen, the programme team will be refining the design and doing further testing of that option. This will include looking at more detail in terms of how the various junctions around the town centre will cater for the movement by vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and the locations of bus stops and taxi ranks.
